Nintendo has officially announced Octopath Traveler 2, a brand new follow-up to Square Enix’s 2018 hit retro-style RPG. The original Octopath Traveler marked the debut of HD-2D, which has since been used in Triangle Strategy and Live A Live and now the game that started it all is coming back with a fresh new adventure. Check out the debut trailer from today’s Nintendo Direct above!
The game accidentally leaked just before the Direct over on Green Man Gaming (thanks @Wario64!), but this is still an extremely pleasant surprise. And, following in the footsteps of the Bravely series’ confusing numbering, Octopath Traveler 2 is actually the third Octopath game, following the release of the mobile game Champions of the Continent in the West earlier this year.
Path actions for each of the new eight characters will change depending on the time of day, with all base jobs reminiscent of the game’s initial eight.
We were big fans of the original game, calling it a “special RPG” in our 9/10 review. Let’s hope we can give that same praise to the sequel when it launches in 2023.
